Midwives respect pregnancy and birth as
pivotal events in a
woman's life. In order for a pregnant woman and her child to have a
peaceful birth experience and respect to which they are entitled, the
mother must have an attendant who truly listens to her and honors her
choices. Midwives are present for the purpose of offering their
experience, encouragement and support.
Flexibility is also a must with
pregnancy and birth; they are
dynamic events. We are flexible to meet your needs and desires, and any
situations that may develop.

I
became a nurse-midwife because the philosophy of
midwifery assumes that birth is a safe, beautiful and normal process.
Midwives know that pregnant and birthing women are not sick, that
birth is not inherently dangerous, and that their new babies are
nowhere safer than in their mother's care.
I have been a certified nurse-midwife since 1986, doing
both home
and hospital births. Since 1992, I have been attending births on Kauai.
I have
also had three home births myself.
With these resources, I would like to offer my years of
experience
to assist you and your family throughout your pregnancy and birth.

Since becoming a certified nurse-midwife
in 2000, it has been my dream to offer alternative options in maternity
care and I'm profoundly grateful to have made this dream a reality with
Home Birth Kaua`i. I share the midwifery philosophy that pregnancy and
birth are usually normal, natural, healthy processes that women are
well equipped to undertake.
My clinical background includes both hospital and birth center
experience, however my passion is practicing midwifery in the
out-of-hospital setting because of the great flexibility it offers in
adapting care according to the needs, preferences, and values of
individual women and families. It is an honor to serve women during the
sacred time of starting or growing a family and my goal for every
pregnancy is a healthy mom and healthy baby.

My
original
career
as
an
electrical engineer and software developer took a
radical turn after the birth of my first baby at home with midwives. I
was overcome with awe at the incredible design of a woman's body to
grow and birth her baby, and began my journey to gain the education and
experience to give other mothers the same support. As a
Christian, I believe that children are a blessing from the Lord, and
that pregnancy is a transformative time of personal growth in a woman's
life.
After four years of didactic study and clinical internship in an
out-of-hospital setting, I obtained my Certified
Professional Midwife credential in 2009. I am a mother to three
children, all born at home with midwives.
